District DEI Team Presents Final Report

District DEI Team Presents Final Report

At the June 12th Board of Education Special Meeting, the District DEI Team presented their final report.

Some key highlights include:

  • Student Classroom Time Replaced with Staff DEI Training:  "Provide more time for professional development" and consider "late starts or half days" for this training (video 2:11:51)

  • Material Changes to Town of Darien:  "We believe there needs to be systemic change within our community" (video 2:11:26)

  • Parents on the Periphery:  Using CASEL framework to place "Social and Emotional Learning" (SEL) at the center of student focus with "Families & Caregivers" at the far edges (publication page 91)

  • IDEA Program Rethink:  Review the IDEA Gifted Program identification criteria and "address potential biases that exist within the process" given the alleged lack of diversity (publication page 103)

  • Mandatory Bias Training:  "Engage all staff in implicit bias training" to ensure equity in all IDEA referrals (publication page 103)

Do you disagree with the DEI Team's findings? Let the Board of Education know that a comprehensive, data-driven review of the report is needed before any recommendations are considered.

Subject:  Please think twice about the DEI Team Report

Dear Board of Education Members:

I do not support the DEI Team's findings that student classroom time should be replaced with staff DEI training, material changes are needed in Darien, parents should be on the periphery of their children's SEL education, the IDEA Program needs a rethink, and mandatory bias training is necessary in our schools.

The Board should do a comprehensive, data-driven review of the report before any recommendations are even considered.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
